As expected, I am totally exhausted from the Camporee this weekend. David took some video of the first voyage of the “Redux” (our cardboard canoe), but my Internet connection here at the house is completely inadequate for uploading it (it would take over an hour and shut down pretty much everything else until it was done). So I will upload it from either the office or the church tomorrow.
Meanwhile, here is a photo of Beth paddling the kayak back to the dock.
She did remarkably well!
I told the kids before the race that I thought our two boats would take two of the top three spots, and we did! That said, one of our runs also had the worst time. I’ll give details tomorrow.
OK, bad attempt at a cliffhanger.

Amazing how little draft the Kayak has in this shot. It should skim across the water.

Draft is controlled by the amount of water a boat displaces – it’s an equal weight. Beth doesn’t weigh very much – maybe the same as ten gallons of water. The real strength of the kayak design was that it could turn on a dime. They changed the race course from 2009, so that we had to make a U-turn around the buoy. In a kayak, that is pretty easy – especially when it’s a white water kayak designed for quick turns.

Looks like it floats like a cork!

Yes! Buoyancy was not a problem at all.

Not that bad an attempt. I am on the edge of my seat, to hear it from you or Joy, I was driving to MA when she got home and didn’t get back until after midnight. She must be extremely exhausted too, because she still isn’t up yet! So the race is on…. who tells me all the wonderful details…FIRST! Oh, I have a Phoebe couple building a nest on the upper corner of my kitchen window frame, unfortunately didn’t get a picture the first day I saw it, but trying to get one every day since, you are welcome to come by anytime to see if you want.

I have posted a video now, but still haven’t given a full report. I’m sure Joy will win this contest.

Paddling back to the dock is a good thing, it means the cardboard boat stayed afloat. It looks like it does better than mine.

Maybe for a limited time. It did take on some water, and I wouldn’t attempt a river trip in a cardboard boat. A quarter mile is about as far as this one would have gone. It stayed together for six runs, and it was about done after that.
